Where is the crater?

The picture above shows a large crater in the Arizona desert. It shows the kind of hole made by just a small meteor hitting the earth. A meteorite 10km across would make a crater about 150 to 200 kilometres across - it would be HUGE! But scientists could not find a crater that size anywhere on earth.

An oil company was surveying over the warm, shallow waters of the Caribbean ocean north of the Yucatan coast. Soon after the survey began, an extraordinary pattern in the rocks could be seen. Geophysicists knew that what they were looking at was a buried impact crater nearly 180km across with its centre located near the town of Chicxulub. This was the crater they were looking for, and they had not been able to see it because the crater was under water!
