"In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit".

This is how the idea about Hobbits in JRR Tolkien's books began. Tolkien was working with some rather boring School Certificate papers at home. Looking at a blank page he suddenly got this idea. So, he scribbled down this one sentence about the Hobbit, and later pondered what a Hobbit should be.

In the years to come JRRT made two books the world will remember him for: The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings.

J.R.R. Tolkien is the 'father' of modern fantasy literature. His was the first, and for many, the best. The Hobbit, and to a greater extent, The Lord of the Rings, combine the 'feel' of ancient mythology, with captivating characters, and an intensely rich sense of history; a history which Tolkien spent more than 50 years creating.

It is estimated that The Hobbit has sold in 35 million copies making it the best selling fiction ever. Lord of the Rings has sold around 50 million copies! .
