Choral Concert

Choral Concert

Misako Sato, Second-Year Class 5

The 2000 choral singing contest. Did all that practice pay off?
Once a year, our school hires the city's Green Hall, which is used for concerts and other events, to hold our choral concert. The concert is held in December and is an important event for us. No sooner is the Ohnominami Festival over in October than each class starts rehearsing for the concert.

To begin with, each class selects two members for the Choir Committee. It is these who are mainly responsible for choosing the pieces to be sung by each class and by each year. After that, it is two months of non-stop rehearsals.

The concert is not a competition. Each class can have fun singing without worrying about whether they will be placed higher or lower than others. It seems, however, that some students would like the concert to be a competition.

On the day, after eating our packed lunches at school, we all walk over to Green Hall. The concert starts in the afternoon.

First of all the whole school sings. After that, the first, second, and third years sing in turn. As this is the first time that the first year are taking part in the concert, they are a little nervous. But because it is their first time they have probably been rehearsing extra hard and their singing is pure and spirited. The second year has already done this once before, so they give a beautiful, balanced performance. For the third year this will be the last time. They are familiar with the procedure and relaxed, producing a wonderful harmony. It is really worthwhile listening to them.

Although we all rehearsed so often for so long, the concert seemed to be over in the blink of an eye. We are left with the feeling "Oh, it's over." But as a second year student now, I will have the opportunity to enjoy the choral concert once more. I mean to try even harder next year.

Year after year the whole school unites to produce beautiful singing. Please come to hear us one day.
