     V. Storms: A violent disturbance in the atmosphere. Sudden change in air pressure and rapid air movements.

1.  Rainstorms and snowstorms are formed when two different fronts collide.  If the windspeed increases during a snowstorm a blizzard results.  If the temperature drops during a rainstorm, then an ice storm results.

2.  Thunderstorms: When a cold front moves in and meets a warm front, cumulonimbus clouds produce thunderstorms.  (Heavy rain, thunder, and lightning)  During thunderstorms the positive charges (+) build in clouds and the negative Earth (-) attracts it.

3.  Cyclones: are low pressure that contain rising warm air.  Cooler air moves in to take the place of the rising warm air.  The winds move counterclockwise.  Cyclones bring rainy, stormy weather.

4.  Anticyclones: are high pressure areas that contain cold, dry air.  The winds move in a clockwise direction and clear, dry , fair weather ussually occur.

5.  Hurricanes: are a powerful cyclone that forms over tropical oceans. (It's called a typhoon if it is over the Pacific Ocean) Hurricanes are the most powerful storms on Earth and are dangerous to people in the coastal areas. Hurricanes cause heavy rains, flooding, and destruction.

6. Tornadoes: are whirling, funnel-shaped cloud that is destructive.  When this low pressure system touches the ground, it acts like a giant vacuum cleaner.
