Winds

    M. Winds: A movement of air from one place to another.

Two types of winds:

1.  Local Winds -
any direction, short distances

2.  Global Winds
- specific direction, long distances

Local and Global Winds are caused by differences in the air pressure due to unequal heating in the air.

     N. Local Winds: Land and water absorb and lose heat at different rates.  The flow of air from the land to the sea is called a land breezeThe flow of air from the sea to the land is a sea breezeA major land and sea breeze is called a monsoon.  It brings warm weather with huge amounts of rain.

Local winds are named according to the direction they are blowing from.

  O.  Global Winds:
The Coriolis Effect is the shift of the wind direction caused by the rotation of the Earth.

   FIVE TYPES OF GLOBAL WINDS:
1.
Doldrums are located near the equator.
2.
Trade Winds are winds that are calm and warm.
3.
Prevailing Westerlies are strong winds.
4.
Polar Easterlies are cold but weak winds.
5.
Jet Streams are narrow belts of strong high pressure, high speed winds.

P.  Measuring Wind:  An anmometer is to measure wind speed.  Wind is measure in meters per second, miles per hour, or knots.
