On 16 January the space shuttle Columbia
lifted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida. A crew of seven - Commander Rick Husband,
Pilot William McCool, mission specialists Michael Anderson,
David Brown and Laurel Clark and scientists Kalpana Chawla
and Ilan Ramon - were on board. Investigators are trying to establish
why, 15 days later, mission STS-107 ended in tragedy when
the shuttle disintegrated while re-entering the Earth's
