Process : Inquiry.

SLO - Students will be able to investigate the resources used on Great Barrier Island and map the industries that resulted from these resources. They will describe the current resource uses and the way that resources are managed.

Read European Settlements, Conservation, Minerals and Mining, Whaling and Kauri - a natural resource.

  1. Great Barrier Island had many industries that extracted the natural resources of the island. On the map below mark and label these industries.

    1. the mining locations of both copper and silver/gold
    2. the whaling station
    3. the kauri logging
    4. the kauri dams




  2. These industries have stopped and now the Department of Conservation manages about 60% of the land on Great Barrier Island. Mark on the map

    1. the areas of current population
    2. the DoC offices

  3. Many people come and visit the island now to enjoy its natural features and historic areas. Use the map to complete the following:

    1. Draw the symbols used on the map which show:

      airfields

       

      camping grounds

       

      DoC information

       



    2. Circle the two airfields on the map. Where are they located?



    3. Where do the ferries berth? Circle these on the map and name the location.



    4. Where can you camp on Great Barrier Island? Name the closest bay, port or harbour.
