Some insects played an important role in Japanese culture. Some of the Samurai clains had insects as their clan crest (symbol), like these decorations of a butterfly on a castle roof.

Even their helmets were sometimes designed to look like the horns of a beetle.

Famous poets also wrote about insects. Here is an example of a Japanese poem, written by Matsuo Basho.

Stillness...
sinking into the rocks
the cicada's voice.
