JULY 1999 QUESTIONS
- (Hana, USA)
I'm trying to find stories and pictures about kappa. Is
there a particular story title or traditional tale about the creature?
The kappa is a mischievous supernatural creature that's said
to live in Japanese waters. Many different versions of the kappa
myth exist all over Japan, but no specific tales are widely known.
It's often depicted as having a green, scaly body with webbed hands
and feet, a turtle shell on the back, a beak-like mouth, cropped hair,
and a dent on the top of the head that holds water.

When did Mt. Fuji last erupt?
Mt. Fuji last erupted in 1707. It's now a dormant volcano, not an
extinct one, which means there's a good chance that it will erupt
again someday.

What city or cities are associated with snow and ice festivals?
Go to the Sapporo Snow
Festival page in Annual
Calendar to read about Japan's biggest snow festival, held in
Hokkaido Prefecture's capital city. Other prefectures also host snow
and ice festivals--mostly those in northeastern Japan and along the
Japan Sea coast--but Hokkaido is where the largest number of these
festivals are held.
