What are the ingredients in miso soup? What is tofu made from?
Why not learn how to make miso soup yourself in our Japanese Cookbook section? Miso--the bean paste used in the soup--and tofu are both made from soy beans. Tofu, by the way, is a commonly used ingredient for miso soup.

From what country was the first European ship to reach Japan?
The first Europeans to reach Japanese shores were Portuguese traders, whose ship landed in 1542 on Tanegashima, an island near Kyushu. They introduced firearms to the country.

Do people learn English in places other than compulsory school?
Compulsory education in Japan lasts nine years--up through middle school--but most kids attend high school as well. For the most part English is taught from middle school and on, and many college students take classes in the subject, too. Also, English conversation schools are highly popular.
