Karate is a technique of self-defense that was developed in Okinawa but was influenced in various ways by Chinese martial arts. Because of King Sho Shin's policy banning weapons in the Ryukyus and a 1609 law prohibiting weapons under the Satsuma clan [LINK], self-defense with "empty hands" (karate) was devised as the main method for Okinawan people to defend themselves against enemies with weapons. * See Folk Traditions for a karate demonstration. |
