A Primer On Okinawa Getting There

Route 2

Welcome to the Kyushu sightseeing route!

The journey through Kyushu starts at Tokyo International Airport at Haneda, better known as Haneda Airport. It was the first international airport to be built in Japan. About 1 hour and 45 minutes after leaving Haneda, the plane touches down at Fukuoka Airport in the city of Fukuoka, the main gateway to Kyushu. The city of Fukuoka was established in 1872 through the merger of the town of Fukuoka, where the Fukuoka clan was based in feudal times, and Hakata, which had been carrying on exchange with the Korean Peninsula and China since ancient times through Hakata Port. For this reason, the name Hakata is still used for many facilities and events in Fukuoka, including its main railway station, its port, a type of fabric produced there, and one of its biggest festivals--the Hakata Dontaku Festival.

Q1: The name Hakata is also used for another major cultural tradition that depicts characters from traditional theater like noh and kabuki as well as famous samurai and sumo wrestlers. Which one is it?

1. Hakata doll
2. Hakata painting
3. Hakata dance
