The Art What youngsters go through to master a traditional craft or art. Japan's top player is Chisato Yamada, who's performed with jazz musicians worldwide. He also runs a club where the tsugaru shamisen is performed almost daily. He has 8 professional apprentices and 15 students of all ages. Most kids say that learning the shamisen is hard at first but that it soon becomes a lot of fun.
