DAILY LIFE

Take a look at how kids spend their time when not in the spotlight.

Susumu Kawamoto

"I love drawing manga. My favorite is Dragon Ball Z, so I draw a lot of characters from it. Here, take a look. Not bad, huh?

"I've been learning a martial art calledtaidosince I was in kindergarten. I'm a green belt now, which means I've moved up three ranks. I want to practice a lot and become a black belt soon.

taido
Susumu is learning a martial art calledtaido.

"My favorite food is meat. I hate eggplants and green peppers, but I don't want to leave anything on the plate, so I wind up eating everything.

"At school, I like gym and Japanese. Now that I'm in fourth grade, I've joined the basketball club. I'm pretty good at reading out loud, probably because I've been studying noh. I like drawing pictures, but I'm not so good at making things; they don't turn out the way I want them to, so it's not fun. Math? I'm horrible at it. [Laughs]

Susumu
Susumu rides his bike near his home.

"I enjoy watching anime on TV. Playing video games is a lot of fun too, but my mother won't let me play it home. So I go to my friends' house and play there. Outdoors, we play by riding toy cars. I also ride my mountain bike when I want to go somewhere a little farther away.

Susumu and Aya
Susumu, Aya, and friends playing.

"I want to become an artist when I grow up. But if I had to choose between drawing, taido, and noh, I guess noh beats out everything else.

"To kids from other countries who're reading this, I'd like to say, 'Please come visit Japan one day. It's a great place.' I've never been abroad, but it would be cool to visit Hawaii. My schoolteacher said the ocean there is a very deep blue. I'd love to go there one day."

Kawamoto family
Starting with Susumu and Aya's dad, the whole Kawamoto family loves noh.
