Okonomiyaki

Okonomiyaki is a kind of Japanese pancake filled with a variety of ingredients and is very popular with kids. Okonomi means "as you like," and yaki means "fry," so okonomiyaki means "foods you like, fried."

There are a huge number of restaurants all over Japan that specialize in food fried on a griddle (hot plate), mainly okonomiyaki and yakisoba. The eating style in many of these restaurants is to sit around the griddle, fry the food oneself, and eat it once it is ready. Okonomiyaki is also simple to make at home. When making it at home, the family sits around the griddle and enjoys frying and eating the food together. The fun of cooking together is one of the reasons okonomiyaki is so popular among kids.
