RulersIn the ancient Greek city-states, most of the power was held by a few rich people. Tyrants ruled over the poor in the early centuries. Later, under a more democratic form of government, citizens had more control over who ruled them. They even elected some of their leaders.

One of the most famous Greek rulers was Alexander the Great. He was a military expert and led Greece to victory over many countries around the Mediterranean. He created an empire that spread Greek culture to many countries in the Mediterranean world. Alexander the Great was often represented in art. The scholars who study portraits of Alexander have identified what his portrait looked like - a twisting neck with upturned face, "melting" eyes and parted lips, and thick locks of hair that frame his face and form almost a lion's mane. This small bronze sculpture at the Carlos Museum is probably Alexander.
