2-2 Friction: A Force Opposing Motion

Objectives:

-Define Friction
-Explain how friction affects motion
-Identify the 3 types of friction

Vocabulary:

Friction- Force that acts in the opposite direction of motion, will cause an object to slow down and finally stop.

-  The amount of
friction between two surfaces depends on how hard the surfaces are forced together and on the materials of which surfaces are made.
-  The
force you exert to move an object is in one direction. The force of friction is in the opposite direction.

TYPES OF FRICTION:

Sliding Friction: When solid objects slide over each other.

Rolling Friction: Produced by objects that have wheels or ball bearings, less friction than sliding.

-
Fluid Friction: When objects move across or through fluids, less friction than sliding or rolling.

-  Friction is not always
troublesome, it often can be very helpful since it causes some friction between objects.
