Section 1-3 Notes Continued... 4. The parasite's unlucky "Partner" is called its host. Parasites usually do not kill their host, although may weaken it greatly. 5. Some organisms are considered parasites even though they do not feed on their host. Adapting to the Environment 1. Evolutionary changes that make organisms better suited for thei environment occur by means of the process known as natural selection. 2. Only individuals that are best suited for their environment survive and produce offspring. 3. The net result of natural selection are changes in the behavior and physical charcteristics of species that make them better suited for their environment called: adaption. Adaption to Predators 4. Organisms have evolved to defend themselves against predators: -running fast -having hard shells -producing odors to repel predators -colors and shapes that allow them to blend -sharp thorns or spines -poisonous chemicals -live in large groups Adapting to Competitors 5. Organisms have evolved many adaptions for dealing with competition. Adapting in Symbiosis 6. Organisms have evolved to adapt to each other so that each can survive. End of section 1-3 Notes! |
