Volcanologists
A volcanologist is a scientist who
studies volcanoes and gives advice to emergency services when a
volcano erupts.
They monitor volcanic activity. They
study how and why volcanoes erupt. They watch eruptions
happening, and monitor active and dormant
volcanoes. They also study earthquake activity
and takes samples of gases to predict when and how volcanoes
will erupt.
They may also write articles, reports and papers, and advise the government and various industries on the risks from volcanoes. Volcanologists need to have good research and report-writing skills. They need to have excellent science skills including sampling, analysis and research skills. They should also have excellent written and oral communication skills and creative-thinking skills.
Volcanologists need to know about volcanoes, the processes of eruption of magma (hot, liquid rock) and how it behaves. They need to have a university degree in maths, physics, and chemistry. Volcanologists work in offices, laboratories and on and around volcanoes. They spend a lot of time travelling to volcano sites around New Zealand and overseas.
