Good or bad? |
Volcanoes are very dangerous, and can kill people and animals. They can destroy houses and buildings. But there are advantages of living near a volcano. |
Volcanoes provide energy we can use, also called geothermal resources. Heat from the earth's crust is being converted to energy which we can use to make electricity.
The big advantages to this type of energy are
that it is very clean and the resources will probably never run out.
When a volcano erupts it throws out
a lot of ash. At first this ash can be very harmful to
the environment, but after a time the ash layer, which
contains many useful minerals, will make a soil that is very
good for growing things. Nearly everywhere volcanoes are
located people use the rich soil for farming. Even
after an eruption people still return because of the fertile
soil around the volcano. Volcanoes can produce very
spectacular scenery like the beautiful sunsets caused by
explosive eruptions. Other features include plant-rich
environments, stunning eruptions, beautiful lava fountains
etc. A country such as Hawaii is getting
a lot income from tourism... and why do tourists like to go
to Rotorua? The eruption of the Vesuvius in AD
79 has been one of the most famous eruptions ever. The
cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii were buried by a rain of
ashes and mud. Later, scientists would discover the
city of Pompeii which remained partly whole because of the
blanket of ash. Now people could learn about the
Roman culture and history!
So what do you think? Are volcanoes good or bad? Could you do a PMI, or use your six hats to think about it?
