| A Hawaiian word, pronounced "ah-ah". It means a type of lava flow with a very rough, jagged surface. A'a lava is much more sticky than pahoehoe lava and also flows down slopes more slowly. The slopes of Rangitoto Island show great examples of blocky a'a flows. |
