The Auckland Volcanic Field

Auckland is built on a volcanic field. That means that over many thousands of years, small volcanoes have erupted all over the area where the city is built. The map above shows the main cones that remain after each eruption.

The most recent eruption was the one that built the island of Rangitoto. That happened about 800 years ago, while Maori were living nearby, but Europeans had not yet discovered New Zealand.

The volcanoes over Auckland will not erupt again. If there is another eruption in the area, it will be somewhere new, not in an existing cone.
