Garnets are fairly hard, but not as
hard as rubies. This gemstone must be taken out and
reset
each time a piece of jewelry is repaired.
In the olden days Garnets were
carried as amulets
against accidents in travel. Some Asian people and Red
Indians used them as bullets, because they thought that
their rich, glowing color might cause more damage.
Red Garnet was once used to cure
fever, and yellow Garnets to cure jaundice.
If the cure did not work, the apothecary
was accused of not using real garnets.
Noah was supposed to have hung a
large Garnet in the ark for giving light.
