Amethyst

Amethyst is a kind of Quartz, silicon dioxide, which looks transparent to semi-transparent purple. It is fairly hard and tough.

Amethyst comes from Brazil, Uruguay, Russia, Africa, Sri Lanka, Japan, Mexico, Rhodesia & India. They are available in all sizes and shapes, and don't cost too much money.

The word Amethyst comes from the Greek word amethustos meaning "not drunk". In the olden days people thought that it protected you from getting drunk.

The best color is a deep rich purple with a slight reddish glow. Amethyst can be made in a laboratory, but it is not done very often. Artificial amethysts are hard to tell from the real thing.

Because purple was a royal colour, amethysts were treasured by emperors, kings and queens throughout history.
