Products such as beef jerky, salamis, and Chinese sausages are made from dried meat, which have not been through any process to destroy diseases. New Zealand's greatest threat is foot and mouth disease. This virus lives in many overseas countries and can survive for a long time in meat products. If we got foot and mouth disease here, we would not be able to sell any of our meat overseas. We would probably have to kill hundreds and hundreds of cows on our farms, like they have had to do in Britain when they got foot and mouth. |
