Traffic Lights

When a lot of traffic is trying to use the same road, it can cause problems. The very first traffic light was two green and red lamps that were put up outside Britain's Houses of Parliament. It was to stop the horse drawn carriages from banging into each other!

Unfortunately it blew up, and killed a policeman nearby. So people didn't think it was a great idea at first.

Then, in the 1900's, an American man made a signal that raised and lowered signs saying "Stop" and "Go".

Interesting idea - do you think it is as good as having green and red lights? Why?

This is a modern stop sign.

We don't really know what the Stop and Go signs looked like.

The first traffic lights that looked rather like the ones we have today weren't invented until 1926, where they were used in England.

Now we have them everywhere, all over the world.
