How you steer the boat

The rudder is the part of the boat that moves to left and right, allowing you to steer the boat in the direction you want. On small yachts it is right at the stern, but on huge yachts it may be totally invisible under the water.

A small yacht like that on the left has a tiller, which is like a long handle. You push it to the left to make the boat go right, and to the right to make it go left. (And yes, it is confusing to start off with!)

Bigger boats have wheels instead.

This movie shows how a small yacht goes about (turns around by heading into the wind). You can see the skipper pushing the tiller away from himself as he makes the turn.

This movie is on a far more windy day. You can see how the skipper needs to move his weight about the boat in order to keep it upright. If he did not move his weight, the yacht would capsize.
