single scull The
world Champion Rob Waddell
These twin sisters Caroline and
Georgina Evers-Swindell, gained an entry in the double
sculls event.
Crews race in boats from singles to eight oared with coxswain. There are also double sculls, quadruple sculls, fours with and without coxswain and pairs with and without coxswain. Single oars are sweeps and a sculler has two. The boats were originally made of wood but now are mostly plastic and carbon fibre.
To ensure fairness the top courses now have to be 2000 metres in length (plus an additional area at the finish) and a lane for each crew provided by buoying.
There are 14 events of which women can enter 6.
