New Zealand wins in 1995!

When New Zealand won the cup in 1995, sailing in the boat Black Magic, everyone was very excited.

It is traditional to drink champagne from the cup, and this is what Russell Coutts is doing in the photo to the left.

This win meant that for the first time, the America's Cup races could be held in New Zealand, and tourists who are interested in sailing would have a good reason to come and visit New Zealand, and spend money in the country.

It was decided to hold the races in the Hauraki Gulf, and to build a special "village" in the Viaduct Basin for all the yachting syndicates. This was needed because there are hundreds of people working for each syndicate, and many of the syndicates have more than one boat. There are people in the syndicates who sew sails, who prepare food, who study the weather, who handle publicity, who build and repair the boats -- in fact there are many many more than the sailors who actually sail the boats.
