Thirty-seven-year-old Russell Coutts began his successful yachting career in 1979 when he won the New Zealand Laser Championships at the age of 17.

From that illustrious beginning, he has racked up more than 20 first-class line honours, plus a gold medal in the Finn Class at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Coutts was made a Commander of the British Empire in 1995 for his outstanding contribution to New Zealand yachting. Ten years earlier he had been made a Member of the British Empire.
