The stern is the back of
the boat. Wires that come from the top of the mast are
backstays, which are collectively known as the "runners" and
are the wires which prevent the mast toppling forward.
Only the windward
runners are tensioned and the higher the wind, the more they
are tensioned. During manoeuvres the
new windward runner must be tensioned while the new leeward
runner is slackened off. The wires &endash; which hold a
load of up to four tons - run through a block to the runner
winch.
