The mast and boom

The mast and boom are known jointly as the rig.

The mast is the vertical spar, made of carbon fibre, up which the mainsail and various headsails are hoisted.

It is about 36m tall and weighs 800kg load, held up by various wires running to the front (forestay) and back (backstays) of the boat. Sideways support is given by shrouds.

The boom is a carbon fibre spar about 9m long which supports the foot of the mainsail. It weighs 70kg.
