home The Sun

The Sun is a large ball of gas which gives us heat and light. It is our nearest star.

Our Sun is made up of many layers. The centre of the sun is called the core, and it is where the energy is produced. We know it makes energy because we can feel the heat from it on a sunny day.

The sun's energy travels out from the core giving off light. It takes millions of years for this light to get to the outside of the sun. It is very dangerous to look straight at the sun, because it can damage your eyes.
