So what's beneath the soil of Mars? Well, NASA wanted to find that out too, and they began the Mars Surveyor Program.

In 1996 two launches were made to Mars. First came the Mars Global Surveyor, which analyzed Mars surface from orbit. Then came the Mars Pathfinder, which landed on the planet's surface and analyzed the terrain and weather. It also launched a rover which roamed about the Martian surface while guided by hands on Earth.
