What is light?

Light is everywhere in our world. We need it to see: it carries information from the world to our eyes and brains.

Light is a kind of travelling energy. Energy from the sun travels as light and is absorbed by the human eye. It sends a message to the brain that we call "seeing".

Light acts as if it were made up of waves, much like sound waves, or the waves on the sea.

It can be reflected off objects, such as mirrors, or refracted (bent) as it passes through materials. White light can also be separated into the colours that make it up, using prisms.

Light goes in a straight line, and it travels very very fast. It is much faster than sound.

Try it. Stand one person down the end of the field and get them to hit a metal tin (with a big swing of their arm).

Down the other end of the field, which will happen first: seeing the person swing their arm and hit, or hearing the bang?

This is how long it would take to get from the earth to the sun.
