 Electromagnetic spectrum

Light is a kind of energy called "electromagnetic radiation" . This kind of radiation is not harmful, except for an occasional sunburn.

There are other kinds of electromagnetic radiation too (radio waves, microwaves, x-rays, etc.), but light is the part WE can see, the part that makes the rainbow.

The electromagnetic spectrum is waves of energy. Some of the waves are long (like radio waves), and some are very short (like X-rays). We can only see the waves in the middle, in the part we call visible light.

Machines can make and "see" other wave lengths. In your home you have machines that can detect or send out radio waves, and microwaves.

Honey bees can see ultra violet light, which human beings can't.

If you look down below, you can see the size of the different waves, and what kind of energy they are. Visible light is the small area in the middle.
