Tahiti

Tahiti is one of the islands (the biggest) in French Polynesia. France runs them, and the second language is French, not English.

On bigger islands, there are beautiful beaches on the coast, and high craggy mountains in the interior.

Tourists from many different countries go to Tahiti for a holiday, but it is a very expensive place to stay compared with the rest of Polynesia.

This hotel has special bungalows out over the water for people to stay in.

The people in Tahiti are very good at dancing, and they often put on performances for the tourists.

Although most islands are beautiful, some have been ruined. The French people decided to test their nuclear weapons (by exploding their bombs to see how they work) on an island called Moruroa.

This means that radiation contaminated the environment, and the air, water and land are not safe. The French people didn't want to ruin their own country, so they came to Polynesia to let off their bombs.

Many people in the world, and Greenpeace, were very angry that the French people did this. It was only in 1996 that they stopped the testing and said it was over.
