What can you do?

There are three key words to remember, if you want to live in a better environment.

Reduce! bb- Reuse! -bb Recycle!

REDUCE

Not producing waste in the first place is the best way to minimise waste

* Buy things that aren't in bulky packages

* Don't use disposable plastic, paper or polystyrene items

* Conserve water and power, and don't waste it

REUSE

This is the second best thing you can do to minimise waste - use things in another way

* Use old towels and clothes as cleaning rags

* Give unused food to other people

* Pass on toys and clothes to other people

* Use the other side of pieces of paper for scrap paper

RECYCLE

Recycle only after you have considered reduction and reuse of waste

* Recycle as much as possible - glass, cans, paper and plastic

* Make sure everyone knows where to put recylable items

* Set up a compost bin to compost food waste.

FOLLOWUP

1. Write down your goals for your family. Make one "reduce" goal, one "reuse" goal, and one "recycle" goal.

2. Look at the archived site on the intranet about All Sorts of Insects. Read up about what worms do in a compost heap. They are very useful creatures for recycling!
