Garden tools

This page shows you some of the tools that are commonly used in the garden.

The garden fork can be used to break up the ground, or dig up plants. Two forks used back to back can be used to break apart roots if you are dividing plants.

If you need to smooth or level the soil, or to clean up heaps of weeds, a garden rake is a useful tool to use.

Shovels are used to dig loose soil, or any compost or manure you are spreading on the garden.

A spade, on the other hand, is what you need if you are going to dig into the soil, to dig a hole for planting, for example.

A hose is needed to water the garden, but it is very annoying when it kinks, and you can't straighten it out!

A pruning knife is used by gardeners who propagate plants, or who want to make clean cuts on plants.

Secateurs are used to prune plants that are small enough to clip. (If they are very large, you use a pruning saw.) They are very useful, and most gardeners carry one with them all the time.

A watering can is useful for watering potplants.

A trowel is mostly used when gardeners are planting out small seedlings, and don't need to use a huge spade.
