Tips
for Printing Web Pages
There
are so many different web browsers and printers, often with
user-defined setups, that it is unrealistic to expect they
will all output a webpage in the same way.
The
background
pages
in the Great Barrier Island section have printer-friendly
versions. At the bottom of every background page, there is a
link to the printer-friendly version. These versions have
the top, bottom and the left-hand navigation removed to
maximise the chance that all information fits on 1 or 2
page(s) when printed.
All
activity
pages
are print-friendly. There is minimal space devoted to
navigation which is in the form of text-only links at the
bottom of each page. These pages use a style sheet to set
most of the text to 9pt Verdana.
You
should always Print . . . Prevew to see whether the printed
output is going to fit onto pages in the way you would like.
You can then set the printer to only print the pages you
want, rather than to print all pages.
Most
of the suggestions below maximise the area for printing by
removing headers and footers and setting smaller
margins.
Internet
Explorer
File
. . . Page Setup
Delete
the header. It usually has information like this: &w&bPage &p
of &P
Delete
the footer. It usually has information like this: &u&b&d
Click
OK and try File . . . Print.
Netscape
Navigator
File
. . . Page Setup
There
are 2 checkboxes ticked under header and 3 checkboxes ticked
under footer. Click to remove each tick.
Click
OK and try File . . . Print.
Notes:
The
printed output from other browsers and different versions of
Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator can be altered in
similar ways.
If
the content does not fit on one page, you can also decrease
page margins in the File . . . Page Setup area. However,
many printers will not let you set the top margin to zero as
the printer needs some room to grab the paper before
printing starts.
If
the content does not fit on one page, you may also need to
alter the default printing page size from, say, letter to A4
in the File . . . Page Setup area.
Page
orientation should be portrait rather than landscape.
If
you are using some type of laser printer you can
choose to print out at less than 100% size and therefore
more information will apppear on a single page.
Good
luck
