What are hydroponics? |
What would it be like for astronauts to grow plants in space? Plants need light, water, food (nutrients), and something to "hang on to" to grow.
Usually soil provides nutrients (and a "holding tank" for water), but nutrients can be added directly to the water as a substitute for soil using a technique called hydroponics. Scientists are experimenting with ideas, including hydroponics, for better food production to accommodate our planet's growing population.
Scientists are also experimenting with hydroponics for use with food production in future space explorations. It is not very likely that a spacecraft could carry enough soil to grow plants, but it could use recycled water to grow plants hydroponically.
With or without soil, plants can be grown in an artificial environment, as long as all their needs are met.
