Okay, so they're kind of a mixed blessing, especially when it's time for your "booster" shots. But when England's Dr. Edward Jenner first came up with the idea of injecting a healthy person with a mild disease called "cowpox" to protect them against a much deadlier disease called "smallpox," he created a way to protect future generations from many infectious diseases, from measles to polio and more. And thanks to a world-wide campaign of vaccinations, smallpox has been virtually eradicated (destroyed) around the world.
