  • A person who studies ants is called a myrmecologist.
  • Fire ants are very dangerous because of their bite - we are trying to keep them out of New Zealand. Fire ants attack and bite anything moving.
  • Ants follow each other by smelling the trail left by other ants.
  • In 20 days a queen ant can lay 100,000 eggs. 
  • Ant nests have a queen, lots of female worker ants, a few males with wings, and some soldier ants, who defend the colony.
  • Most ants are omnivorous, which means they eat almost anything, including insects, honeydew, sweets, greases, oils, vegetables, and bread.
