Banda Aceh

Banda Aceh was closest to the epicentre of the earthquake, and the tsunami hit very fast after the quake.

One third of the buildings in this city were destroyed.

Workers during the cleanup had to wear masks, because of the stench from rotting bodies and toxic waste.

Two weeks later, there were still bodies lying around waiting to be collected.

In Banda Aceh alone, there were 50,000 bodies.
