Queen Victoria retired to the Isle of Wight after the death of her beloved husband, and seldom was seen in public after that time. However she was still very much loved and admired by her people. During the period from 1840 to 1882, seven attempts were made to kill her, but she refused to be intimidated by this. During the time of her reign, the monarchy become more removed from party politics, and the British Empire doubled in size, taking in India, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and parts of Africa and the South Pacific. |
Victoria did not much approve of her eldest son, Bertie, who was to become King after her. She lived a long life, and died, as monarch of the world's largest empire, on 22 January, 1901. |

At that stage, she was the head of a large family, and her death marked the end of an era. The time of her reign, from 1837 to 1901, was called the Victorian era.
