Did You Know...

Fact

That a Jumbo Jet (Boeing 747) can carry more than 400 passengers.

Fact

That an aircraft can't drive in reverse. It has to be pushed back away from the terminal by a tug. Do you think that's why you've never seen an aircraft with a rear vision mirror?

Fact

That if you stood on tip toes in the engine of a Jumbo Jet and stretched as tall as you can, you would not be able to touch the top (unless you are taller than me).

Fact

That MAF (Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry) has officers based at the airport to prevent any insects or diseases from coming into New Zealand which might cause a problem for our agriculture, forestry or horticulture. Some of the officers have cute dogs that are trained to sniff out food. You might see them if you are travelling to Auckland from another country.

Fact

That after passengers check-in their luggage, it goes along a conveyor belt. Computer readers scan the bar code on the luggage tags and automatically direct the luggage to go on the correct aircraft. One hundred bags can be sorted in just one minute. Now that is fast, it's a jetblast!!

Fact

That there are always more aircraft flying in the sky than there are planes on the ground at airports.

Fact

Over 7,500 people work at Auckland International Airport. The airport is like a small town and so as well as having pilots, air traffic controllers, plane refuellers, aircraft caterers and others directly involved with the aircraft, we also have shop keepers, gardeners, firefighters, Police Officers, childcare workers, service station attendants, hairdressers, a chemist, doctor and all sorts of other people that you would expect to find working in a town.
