JOHN CABOT (1451-1498)

John Cabot was born around 1451, by the name of Giovanni Caboto. He had one son named Sebastian.

He made one voyage to North America (which he thought was Japan) around 1497. He may have gone as far south as Maine, or as far north as Labrador. King Henry VII was pleased with his efforts and granted Cabot a pension of 20 pounds a year. Cabot wanted to return to "Japan," but his ship sunk in 1498, ending the life of John Cabot.
