The kitchen store room, where food supplies are kept.

Survival bags provide enough equipment and food for two people for three days (or three people for two days). So 12 people would need 6 survival bags. Perhaps the most important item in the survival bag is the tent followed by the primus and fuel. Survival kits do not have radios as the batteries would go flat. All field parties carry radios with spare batteries.

The sleeping bags people use are made from ripstop nylon with a down filling (20%down and 80%goose feathers). The outer bag has a hood. The bags together are rated to -45 degrees C. In the field scientists sleep on thick (100mm) foam mats and the bags have an outer cover as well.
