is Miss Baillie?
Still in Italy, the next stop is
down near Naples and Sorrento. Here Miss Baillie will be able to
visit the ruins of Pompeii, a town that was destroyed by a volcanic
eruption nearly two thousand years ago. It has been dug up by
archaeologists, and you can walk around the ruins to see how people
lived in those days.
Then she will head back up Italy again to Venice, the famous city on the water.
There aren't any roofs on the
houses and shops in the streets of Pompeii, because they
were destroyed. You can see the walls and the cobbled
streets, and even the grooves in the stones worn away by the
wheels of carts and carriages! Venice is built on the water, and
although it has some roads, most of the houses are on
canals, and you get around by boat or by walking over
bridges. If Miss Baillie is really lucky,
she might be able to have a ride on a gondola! It costs a
lot of money, though. >
