Flamenco

Flamenco is a special kind of music and dance, which is often made up by the musicians and dancers. It is made up of song, dance and guitar and comes from the Southern part of Spain.

Flamenco is very famous, and the dancers and musicians work long and hard to be very skilled. The traditions of flamenco owe a lot to the gypsy people of Spain, and often the music and the words of the songs are very sad.

This photo is of a very famous flamenco dancer. You can see that she is wearing the traditional long dress in bright colours, and with lots of frills on it.

The shoes worn by the dancers are heavy black strap shoes that can stamp loudly, and make a lot of noise with the heels, rather like tap shoes.

Dancers practise for many years to be good at flamenco. One of the things the dancers learn is how to use their hands in the dance.

This photo shows the hands of a very good flamenco dancer, and shows you how beautiful they can be.

Sometimes women and girls dress up for special occasions in these kinds of dresses - perhaps for a special festival.

These dresses are hanging up in a street market, so people can buy them.
